Text Box: Purdue University’s Theatre Division has acquired Thematics’ Custom Series LIGHTBOX specifically tailored to meet the school’s needs. LIGHTBOX, an LED and Fiber Optic Model Lighting Kit for any scaled theater, architecturally mimics Purdue’s two theaters and features their entire lighting inventory, including Color Kinetics LEDs, 72 fiber optic dimmer channels, and a complement of 300 lights. When integrated into the production process, it gives users the ability to design, learn, teach and collaborate in a whole new way.

LIGHTBOX was tailored for the University before its theaters were actually built. “Purdue asked us to design their LIGHTBOX around a building that didn’t exist yet,” recalls Thematics owner/designer Charles Kirby. “Ryan Koharchik sent us drawings of the theaters and a list of their unique properties: 350 channels of lighting, lots of dimmers, an ETC-Emphasis system. We were able to configure the BOX so that any of the lighting boards they have at the space could be used to design and pre-cue. A Custom Series LIGHTBOX can be reconfigured to match all of the two theaters’ lighting positions.”

Tony Galaska, Purdue’s visiting instructor of lighting design, “is using LIGHTBOX to develop lighting looks Text Box: to illustrate what productions will look like in public show-and-tell presentations. We’ve never been able to do that before.
We’re eager to use it on some of these new projects, to see how it will affect the process and change the course of how we do things. I think, by being able to visualize things in scale, it opens up more lines of communication between scenic, lighting and costume designers.
All of our directors are faculty or guest artists. For them to visually communicate with designers is a huge plus. Not all directors are as visually oriented as others. You can talk ’til you're blue in the face about lights, but when you put the light on in a scale LIGHTBOX and show them, all of a sudden they understand. There are a lot of ‘Aahah!’ moments.”

LIGHTBOX News

Text Box: LED technology in all LIGHTBOX light plots
Text Box: Working with our new OEM partner Color Kinetics, one of our associate LIGHTBOX designers, Ben Tevelow, has developed a way to impact our Model Lighting Method in a significant way.
Text Box: Using four little RGB wash fixtures we thought were applicable to model lighting, Ben found a way to contain 150 DMX channels within the Portfolio Series ModelBOX floor. All of the power supplies, data modules and all required hardware are included. The real strength is the broad strokes of color which contrast the fiber optic spot light Text Box: fixtures. The LED little lights specs can be found here: iCove, G2, Flex & Flex SL. RGB technology is taking our industry by storm. It is our responsibility to expose our designers to new ways to work. If something is available to us in the full scale, real world, then it must be there for us in LIGHTBOX. See the light in a whole new scale.

“There were looks that the director developed in our ModelBOX that were absolutely transferred on to the stage,” recalls Russ Jones.  “That could only have been done if he had absolute confidence in the process.  The production was very well replicated”
